Free llms.txt generator: Your llms.txt file, written from your website
Enter your website address. Mark reads your pages and sitemap, checks your current llms.txt and which AI robots your robots.txt lets in, then writes the file in the right format, ready to upload.
Key takeaways in 30 seconds
An llms.txt file is a short Markdown file at the root of your website that points AI tools to your key pages.
- Jeremy Howard (Answer.AI) proposed llms.txt in September 2024, on llmstxt.org.
- The file starts with an H1 with your site name, then a summary, sections of links and an Optional section.
- Google Search ignores llms.txt, so the file won't help or harm your Google visibility.
- llms.txt blocks nothing. Your robots.txt file decides which AI robots can read your website.
- No file guarantees a citation by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Gemini.
- Our free generator reads your website, checks your robots.txt for 11 AI robots and writes the file.
Your customers ask ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity which product to choose. These AI tools read websites to build their answers. Our free llms.txt generator helps you point them to the pages that matter.
The problem is simple. A robot that lands on your website sees menus, legal notices and old blog posts. It has no map of what you sell or which page answers which question.
An llms.txt file gives AI tools that map. It lists your key pages with a 1-line description each. You write it once, place it at the root of your website and update it when your offer changes.
What is an llms.txt file?
An llms.txt file is a short text file written in Markdown. It sits at the root of your website, at yoursite.com/llms.txt. It tells LLMs what your website is about and which pages to read first.
Think of it as a curated table of contents. People can read it too, because Markdown stays readable as plain text.
You may see people search for “llm.txt” or “llms txt”. The name of the convention is llms.txt, with an “s”.
Where the convention comes from
Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed llms.txt in September 2024. He published the format on llmstxt.org. His goal was to give LLMs a short, clean summary of a website.
What about llms-full.txt?
llms-full.txt is a variant that holds the full text of your pages in 1 file. Teams use it mostly for technical documentation. If you run a marketing site or an online shop, llms.txt is usually enough. The generator also checks whether your website already has an llms-full.txt file.
The llms.txt format, with a complete llms.txt example
The llms.txt format follows this order:
- An H1 with the name of your website. It's the only required part.
- A summary in a blockquote, on 1 line that starts with the > sign.
- Optional paragraphs with key facts.
- H2 sections with lists of links, written as
- [Title](URL): description. - An “Optional” section that an AI can skip when it needs a shorter context.

llms.txt vs robots.txt vs sitemap.xml
These 3 files sit at the root of your website. Each one does a different job.
| Criterion | llms.txt | robots.txt | sitemap.xml |
|---|---|---|---|
| Role | Points AI tools to your key pages | Allows or blocks robots | Lists the URLs you want crawled |
| Format | Markdown | Plain text rules | XML |
| Intended reader | LLMs and AI tools | All crawlers | Search engines |
| Blocks a robot | No | Yes | No |
| Status | Proposal from September 2024, ignored by Google Search | Long-standing web convention | Long-standing web convention |
robots.txt decides, llms.txt guides
robots.txt is the file that allows or blocks robots. llms.txt blocks nothing and allows nothing. It only suggests what to read first.
So if your robots.txt blocks GPTBot, your llms.txt won't change that. Check robots.txt first. The generator shows whether each of these 11 AI robots is allowed, partly allowed or blocked:
- GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User (OpenAI)
- ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User (Anthropic)
- PerplexityBot
- Google-Extended
- Applebot-Extended
- Meta-ExternalAgent
- CCBot (Common Crawl)
Does llms.txt actually work?
Nobody can promise you results from an llms.txt file. Here is what we know.
What Google says
In June 2026, Google updated its Search Central guidance. Google Search ignores llms.txt files. Creating one won't harm or help your visibility in Google Search.
Google also says you don't need special machine readable files or AI text files. That applies to Google Search and to its generative AI features, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Keeping the file for other services is fine. In 2025, John Mueller of Google even compared llms.txt to the keywords meta tag.
The signals in its favor
Lighthouse, the audit tool in Chrome, tests llms.txt. The test sits in its experimental “Agentic Browsing” category. To pass, the file must exist and contain links in Markdown format.
Pros and cons
The pros:
- You can create it quickly, especially with a generator.
- It gives AI tools a clean list of your key pages.
- A file with Markdown links passes the llms.txt test in Lighthouse.
The cons:
- Google Search ignores it.
- No file guarantees a citation by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Gemini.
- You have to update it when your website changes.
What really matters to get cited
An llms.txt file is a small extra. 3 things weigh more:
- Let AI robots read your website. Check that robots.txt allows the robots you want.
- Publish clear, structured content. Use explicit headings, short paragraphs and lists.
- Write pages that answer customer questions. Cover comparisons, use cases and setup questions.
Do AI tools already cite your brand? Run the free GEO audit of Mark AI to find out. Then fill the gaps with useful content. Mark AI writes articles, product pages and posts in your brand voice. Your team reviews every piece before you publish.
How to create your file with the llms.txt generator
- Enter your website address. You don't need to sign up.
- Let Mark read your website. Mark reads up to 5 pages, starting with the home page, and your sitemap. It also reads your robots.txt and checks the 11 AI robots.
- Get your file. Mark picks your key pages and writes the llms.txt in the llmstxt.org format. It writes in the language of your website.
- Copy or download it. Copy the text or download it as llms.txt, then upload it to the root of your website.
The generator also works as an llms.txt checker. It tells you if your website already has an llms.txt file and if it follows the format. It checks for an llms-full.txt file too.
Review before you publish
Mark reads up to 5 pages and the titles of your other key pages. You know your business better, so read the file before you upload it.
- Does the summary describe your offer in 1 sentence?
- Are your key pages there? Add the missing ones and remove the ones you don't want to push.
- Does each description say what the reader will find on the page?
- Is a robot you want to let in blocked? Fix your robots.txt before you upload anything.
How to install the file on your website
The file must open at yoursite.com/llms.txt. It goes at the root of the domain, never in a subfolder. A file at yoursite.com/blog/llms.txt won't be found.
Once you upload it, type the address in your browser. You should see the plain text of your file.
Classic server
Connect with FTP or open the file manager of your host. Upload llms.txt to the root folder, next to your robots.txt.
WordPress
Your WordPress site runs on a server, so the FTP or file manager method usually works. Check the help of your host for the exact steps. If you use an SEO plugin, check its documentation for llms.txt.
Shopify, Webflow and Wix
Search the official help center of your platform for “llms.txt” before you start. Each platform handles root files in its own way. If you can't place the file at the root, use a redirect as a fallback: host the file elsewhere and redirect yoursite.com/llms.txt to it. Then test the address in your browser.
Mistakes to avoid
- Blocking AI robots in robots.txt. If GPTBot or ClaudeBot can't read your pages, your llms.txt won't help.
- Naming the file llm.txt. The name is llms.txt, with an “s”. Tools look for that exact name.
- Putting it in a subfolder. The file must sit at the root of your domain.
- Listing every page. Your sitemap.xml already does that. Keep your key pages and move the rest to the Optional section.
- Never updating it. A new product or a removed page makes your file outdated. Review it after each big change on your website.
How to apply this today
- Open your robots.txt at yoursite.com/robots.txt and see which AI robots you block.
- Enter your website address in the generator above. It takes no sign-up.
- Review the draft: the summary, the links and each description.
- Upload the file to the root of your domain, or set a redirect if your platform requires it.
- Test yoursite.com/llms.txt in your browser, and run Lighthouse to see the “Agentic Browsing” result.
- Run the free GEO audit to see if AI tools already cite your brand.
